The History of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas: From Vision to Legacy
De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) stands today as one of the premier educational institutions in Cavite, but its story began decades ago with a vision rooted in service and transformation. The institution's formative years were marked by perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to Lasallian values that continue to shape its identity.
Foundations of a Dream
De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) stands today as one of the premier educational institutions in Cavite, but its story began decades ago with a vision rooted in service and transformation. The institution's formative years were marked by perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to Lasallian values that continue to shape its identity.
The Lasallian Takeover
A decade later, a new chapter unfolded. In 1987, De La Salle University acquired EAC-Cavite, transforming it into a Lasallian institution under the name DLSU-EAC. This transition was spearheaded by Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC, a visionary leader who integrated the campus into the DLSU System. With this change came a renewed focus on Lasallian values—Religio, Mores, Cultura—and a commitment to academic excellence. Dr. Oscar Bautista, appointed as the first Executive Vice President, led massive campus development projects, introduced participative management, and laid the groundwork for a culture of quality education.
Building Identity and Excellence
The 1990s were years of growth and identity formation. The school underwent name changes—from DLSU-EAC to DLSU-Aguinaldo in 1992, and finally to De La Salle University-Dasmariñas in 1996. Under the leadership of Dr. Herminia Torres (1995–2004), the University pursued accreditation with PAASCU, achieving Level 3 status in record time. Dr. Torres emphasized that excellence was not a one-time achievement but a continuous process, and her administration focused on faculty development, research, and infrastructure improvements. The completion of the University Chapel, Museo De La Salle, and the cultural plaza during this period reinforced DLSU-D's identity as a center of learning and heritage.
University Status and Beyond
In 2004, DLSU-D attained its own university charter from the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), a milestone that signified its maturity as an academic institution. This achievement was complemented by its designation as a Center of Development in Information Technology and its Deregulated Status. The following years saw further expansion under leaders like Dr. Estrellita Gruenberg and Br. Augustine "Gus" Boquer FSC, who launched a 14-Point Agenda focusing on academic excellence, community engagement, and sustainability.
Lasallian Mission and Community Service
True to its Lasallian heritage, DLSU-D has always been more than an academic institution. Programs like Balik-Aral and Hatid-Aral provided education to out-of-school youth, while the Lasallian Community Development Center spearheaded outreach initiatives. Environmental advocacy also became a hallmark of the University, with projects like "Green for LIFE" promoting ecological stewardship.
Towards the Future
From its humble beginnings as a small college in a rural town, DLSU-D has grown into a dynamic university that blends tradition with innovation. Its journey reflects the wisdom of its builders—visionaries who believed in education as a tool for transformation. Today, DLSU-D continues to uphold its mission of forming competent, compassionate, and committed Lasallians ready to serve society.
